Fashion Week Mexico concluded with a glamorous show from Alexia Ulibarri. Named Fiera, for “wild,” Ulibarri’s spring collection was inspired by the duality of feminine power, both delicate and sexy. “Fiera is about the force that every woman has inside, about following our instincts and trusting more in our intuition, particularly in times like these,” the designer told Vogue.
The bird-of-paradise flower is an important part of the new collection, reinterpreted in a powerful neon. Leopard and frog prints play starring roles too. The frog connects with the night and the moon, like a guardian, while the leopard conducts us through unfamiliar paths and protects us from difficult circumstances. Deconstructed Victorian silhouettes feature corsets layered over T-shirts, silk fringe, and crochet handcrafted by local artisans.
Proudly made in Mexico, the collection is the work of many collaborators: The golden leopard and other embellishments on some dresses are by Ero Jewelry; Avorigen is behind the incredible bags; Bala Di Gala created the shoes; and a Mexican creative gave life to the T-shirts with her illustrations. The show Ulibarri offered an important reminder: There’s incredible local design here ready to take the world stage.
